Legionella control for hotels
Hotels combine large hot water systems with showers in every room. Some rooms sit empty for days. Your guests may be older or unwell. That adds up to a real legionella risk.
The risks we see in hotels
- Showers and taps in rooms that are not let for days or weeks.
- Large calorifiers that struggle to keep temperature at busy times.
- Long pipe runs to the furthest rooms.
- Spa pools and hot tubs.
- Closed floors or wings during quiet seasons.
Unlet rooms
Outlets in unlet rooms must be flushed at least once a week. That is the most common gap we find. A simple routine for housekeeping fixes it. We help you set it up and record it.
Spa pools and hot tubs
Spa pools carry a high risk and have their own HSE guidance in HSG282. They need daily checks and regular sampling. If you have one we will make sure your scheme covers it properly.
Reopening after a closure
A floor or a whole hotel that has been closed needs its water system recommissioned before guests return. That means flushing and often disinfection. Plan it in before the reopening date.
Questions
Common questions
How often should showers in empty rooms be run?
At least once a week for long enough to draw fresh water through. Record each flush in your log.
Do we need to sample our water?
Sampling is not usually needed for ordinary hot and cold systems that are in control. Spa pools are different and need regular sampling.
What should we do before reopening a closed floor?
Flush every outlet and check the temperatures. If the system has been stagnant for a long time it may need disinfecting first.
