Gyms and leisure

Legionella control for gyms and leisure

Busy changing rooms and warm water everywhere. Gyms and leisure centres have more showers than most buildings. Spa pools add a risk all of their own.

The risks we see in gyms

  • Banks of showers that create fine spray.
  • Showerheads and hoses that scale up quickly.
  • Spa pools and hot tubs.
  • Quiet changing rooms during off peak times or closures.
  • Calorifiers working hard at peak times.

Showers

Showers are the main route for legionella to reach people. The spray is fine enough to breathe in. Showerheads and hoses should be cleaned and descaled every three months. Little used showers should be flushed weekly.

Spa pools and hot tubs

Warm water and spray make spa pools one of the highest legionella risks. HSE sets out the controls in HSG282. They include daily water treatment checks and regular sampling. Your scheme must cover them in detail.

What a typical gym needs

A risk assessment and written scheme. Monthly temperature checks and showerhead cleaning every quarter. Spa pool controls if you have one. Many sites train a duty manager to run the routine checks.

Questions

Common questions

How often should gym showerheads be cleaned?

Every three months is the usual interval. Your risk assessment may set a shorter one if they scale quickly.

Does a hot tub need separate controls?

Yes. Spa pools and hot tubs follow HSE guidance HSG282. They need daily checks and regular sampling.

We close for refurbishment. What happens to the water system?

Flush outlets weekly during the closure if you can. Before reopening the system should be flushed and checked. It may need disinfecting.
